3 points to help in a job interview

I have been conducting a number of interviews recently and wanted to share some findings and potentially give some advice to people who might be out there on the job hunt at the moment. With the current climate as it is, there is going to be stiff competition around for job roles so representing yourself as well as you can is going to be vital.

There are 3 points I would like to highlight; this is certainly not an exhausted list of things to consider in an interview but they have always been important to me and worth highlighting in view of my recent experiences…

1. Make your point and then shut up. There can be a tendency for people that make a point, answer the question put in front of them, and, then continue to spiral around the subject to fill the empty space. Sometimes resulting in the interviewee tying themselves in knots, or, worse still contradicting their original point. If you are asked a direct question, answer it, have confidence in your answer and be quiet. Sometimes an interviewer may leave a space after you have finished your answer to see how you respond. If you felt you have said enough. Be quiet.

2. Have a conversation. You are just a person looking for a job, they are just a person looking to recruit for a job, if they wanted a computer or automated answer they will buy one. You are both people, have a conversation and enjoy the process.

3. Ask for feedback – At the end of the interview ask how you have done, if the recruiter has any doubts about you in the role, ask if you need to provide any further clarity. This moves control back into your court, and, if the interviewer has doubts or concerns you can address them directly at that moment. Recruiting is a sales process this is a perfect way to see if the interviewer has any objection about offering you a role.

Hopefully, these might act as good pointers, if you are out there on the hunt for a role, I wish you the very best of luck.
